School of Natural Sciences Offers Congratulations

The School of Natural Sciences congratulates the following faculty members, recognized with Faculty Senate awards after being nominated by fellow faculty members and students:

  • David Ardell, molecular and cell biology, biological sciences major, recognized with the Senate Faculty Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award for individual excellence in teaching undergraduates;
  • Nestor Oviedo, molecular and cell biology, Quantitative and Systems Biology graduate group, earned the Senate Distinguished Graduate Teaching/Mentorship Award for individual excellence in teaching at the graduate level and mentoring graduate students;
  • Rudy Ortiz, molecular and cell biology, won the Senate Award for Distinction in Research for the creative activities that have had a major effect on the field, either through a sustained record of contributions or through a specific, highly influential contribution

The School of Natural Sciences congratulates the following Outstanding Teaching Assistant award winners for the 2012-2013 schoiol year:

  • Gary Abel, in chemistry and chemical biology;
  • Christiane Pailo, in biology

The school also congratulates the following undergraduate students, who won the Grossman Award for outstanding students in applied mathematics, chemistry and chemical biology, life and environmental sciences, molecular cell biology and physics:

  • Applied math: John Li
  • Chemical sciences: Rachel Bachem, lower division, and Megan Schill, upper division
  • Earth systems science, ecology and evolutionary biology: Whitney Thorpe
  • Physics: Ryan Andosca, for Best Thesis; and Russell Hawkins, Overall winner
  • Biological sciences: Christa Caneda and Christina Lee

The award is named for Dr. Randy and Patricia Grossman, who are longtime supporters of UC Merced, and specifically to the School of Natural Sciences. The Grossmans are Merced residents and Dr. Grossman is a UC graduate.
