Mechanical Engineer Given Air Force Research Award
Congratulations to UC Merced Professor Ashlie Martini, a recipient this year of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Research Program Award (AFOSR YIP).
The AFOSR YIP is open to scientists and engineers at research institutions who have received Ph.D.s or equivalent degrees and who demonstrate exceptional ability and promise for conducting discovery research. The objective of the AFOSR YIP is to foster basic research in science and engineering and to enhance early career development of outstanding young researchers.
Martini was one of only 48 faculty (including four others from UCs) who received this highly competitive award in 2012. Her winning proposal, "Atomic‐Scale Tuning of Layered Binary Metal Oxides for High Temperature Moving Assemblies," will provide $360,000 for three years. The fundamental knowledge she generates will support the design of novel materials for high-temperature aerospace applications, with immediate impact related, for example, to movable control surfaces in hypersonic vehicles.
